Pamporovo is a purpose-built modern ski resort located near to the Greek border. It is the sunniest mountain resort in Bulgaria and the most southern ski resort in Europe, with a skiing season running from mid-December to mid-April. It has an average of 120 sunny days throughout the 150 day season and the temperature does not change abruptly, so there is little danger of avalanche, making the resort safe and tranquil. The resort is scattered over the lower slopes of Mount Snezhanka (1926m), which has a rounded profile making it particularly suitable for families and ski beginners.
In Pamporovo itself, there are many shops and a variety of restaurants and bars. Visitors can enjoy the traditional Rhodope cuisine, which includes Lamb Kebab (cheverme), Stuffed Vine Leaves (sarmi), white Bean Stew (smolenski bob), and a local variation of the traditional Bulgarian cheese banitsa and all at a very reasonable cost.
Apart from skiing, other winter activities include snowboarding, tobogganing and husky dog-sleds. Pamporovo is becoming more popular in summer too with guided walking, cycling tours, tennis courts, horse riding and hiking. From the top of the Snezhanka peak there are wonderful views over the Central Rhodopes and the Thracian Plain and on a clear day you can see the Rila and Pirin mountain ranges and even to Greece.
Pamporovo is without doubt, the most 'upmarket' ski resort in Bulgaria. Boasting 27 ski runs and a resort built on the slopes (Bansko is 12km away from the nearest ski lift - if the gondola doesn't work, you have to get a taxi!) Pamporovo offers a wonderful opportunity to ski and enjoy the stunning Bulgarian scenery.
The mountain paths are luring one to follow them, so that they can reveal to one’s eyes the virgin beauty of nature. Enthusiastic fishermen can indulge in their passion and go fishing for brook trout, which is one of the most delicious in the world.
A real challenge for mountain climbers are the steep rocks of the Trigrad Gorge. One can walk, ride a bike or a horse up the mountains.
